Frequently Asked Questions
Kedarnath is a sacred Hindu temple town in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, situated at an altitude of about 3,584 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas, on the banks of the Mandakini river. It's one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and part of the Char Dham circuit.
Sonprayag (the last motorable point) is roughly 450 km from Delhi by road, taking around 12–14 hours. From Gaurikund, it's a further 16 km trek on foot, pony, palki or helicopter to reach the temple.
The 16 km trek from Gaurikund is moderately challenging with a steady uphill climb, well-paved in most sections. It typically takes 6–9 hours on foot. Pony, palki, and helicopter services are available for those who prefer not to trek.
3N/4D is a fast-paced express plan involving overnight travel both ways plus the trek. It works well for fit travellers on a tight schedule. If you'd prefer a more relaxed pace with a buffer day, we also offer a 4N/5D itinerary — just ask us.
The temple typically opens in late April/early May (Akshaya Tritiya) and closes around late October/early November (Bhai Dooj), based on the Hindu calendar. It remains closed through winter due to heavy snowfall. Exact dates vary yearly — we'll confirm current dates when you book.
Yes, helicopter services operate from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi to Kedarnath, cutting travel time significantly. These are subject to weather, government allocation and availability — Kafall can assist with booking as an add-on to your package.
A valid original photo ID (Aadhaar/passport/driving licence) is mandatory for yatra registration (biometric registration is required at Sonprayag). Kafall assists with the registration process on arrival.
Yes, with the right preparation. Elderly travellers or those unable to trek often opt for pony, palki or helicopter. We recommend a basic fitness check and consulting a doctor beforehand, especially regarding altitude.
May–June and September–October are considered the best months — pleasant weather and clear trek conditions. Avoid the monsoon months (July–August) due to landslide risk on the route.
Network is patchy on the trek itself, with BSNL/Jio having partial coverage in some stretches. Connectivity is generally available at Sonprayag, Gaurikund and near the Kedarnath temple town.
